The Vail set's $550 was the local estate figure in its valuation: what the piece brings from a buyer who can drive over and collect it, not what similar sets are listed for online. Online asking prices assume a national market and a buyer who will pay to ship a sofa, and almost nobody does. The sales from this move and another household's matched the local figures, so Charles moved all of our shop furniture to local estate prices. That is a lower number on paper. It is also the number that sells.
Nothing is lost by pricing this way. A piece priced for a buyer who does not exist sits for weeks, then gets marked down under deadline pressure, usually in the final week before the truck comes. A piece priced for the buyer who does exist sells while there is still time to handle the next one.
