Architectural Salvage · North Carolina

Too good to junk, too slow to sell yourself

Restoration, renovation and demolition crews pull out heart-pine doors, mantels, leaded windows and old lighting every month. Most of it goes in the dumpster or gets stacked at the back of the warehouse, because nobody on the crew has time to sell it. VaultXL sells it for you, straight from where it sits. We photograph it, price it, list it, deal with every buyer and book the pickups. Your crew keeps working.

Every older building in North Carolina gives something up when the work starts. A 1920s bungalow in Dilworth, a mill house in Durham, a farmhouse outside Asheville, a downtown church getting a new sanctuary. The good pieces get set aside, because throwing a six-panel heart-pine door in a roll-off feels wrong. Then they sit. A year later the door is still leaning against a wall, taking up rack space you pay for.

Selling salvage is its own job. Each piece needs measuring, photos, a fair price, a listing, and someone to answer the same questions about dimensions and lead paint until the right buyer turns up. Salvage yards will buy, but usually at a price that leaves room for their markup and the cost of hauling it to their lot. So most crews take a low offer, or keep the piece and hope.

We come to your warehouse or job site, walk the stock with you, and tell you plainly what is worth listing and what is not. You get a written quote before any work starts. Then we measure and photograph each piece where it sits, price it against what comparable salvage has actually sold for, and list it where its buyers look: design marketplaces and our own shop for designers and old-house restorers, eBay for hardware and lighting that ships, Facebook Marketplace for local pickup.

Nothing moves until it sells. Buyers pay in full before a pickup is booked, and pickups fall in windows you set, so nobody turns up at your yard unannounced. Hardware, lighting and smaller pieces can ship. Doors, mantels, columns and windows go to buyers within driving distance or to buyers who send their own freight.

We are based in Charlotte and take salvage from across North Carolina: the Charlotte region, the Triangle, the Triad, and Asheville and the mountains, with the rest of the state by arrangement. Because the stock stays in your building and buyers come to it, the walkthrough and the photography are the only trips. Travel is part of your written quote.

Why VaultXL.

Your warehouse is the showroom

No hauling stock to a salvage yard and no second handling. A piece moves once, when the buyer loads it.

Provenance, without the client's name

A door is just a door until a buyer learns it came out of a 1910 house in Fourth Ward. With your permission we record where each piece came from and put the building's age and town in the listing. The owner's name stays out of it.

Lots when lots make sense

Twelve matching interior doors from one house are worth more together than one at a time, because a restorer can do a whole floor with them. We keep sets together and only split out a piece when it is clearly worth more on its own.

Honest listings

Old paint may contain lead, old glass may be cracked, old hardware may be missing a screw. We say so in the listing, so a buyer who drives two hours is not surprised at your gate.

Built for repeat work

Most contractors pull salvage on every older job. Once we have worked together, new pieces go into the same account: send us photos, we tell you what is worth listing, and we add it to your listings.

Frequently asked.

It depends on your contract. On many jobs the building owner still owns what comes out unless the agreement says otherwise. Before we list anything we ask you to confirm you have the right to sell it, usually with the contract clause or a short written release from the owner. That protects you, the buyer and us.

Solid-wood doors, especially heart pine, oak and chestnut; fireplace mantels and surrounds; leaded and stained glass; original light fixtures; clawfoot tubs and pedestal sinks; cast-iron radiators; porch columns and corbels; door and window hardware; heart-pine flooring and beams in quantity; church pews and furnishings. Hollow-core doors, vinyl windows and builder-grade fixtures are usually not worth a listing, and we will tell you so.

Across North Carolina. We are based in Charlotte and regularly cover the Triangle, the Triad, and Asheville and the mountains; the rest of the state is by arrangement. The stock stays in your building, so after the walkthrough and photography there is no reason for distance to slow a sale down.

Someone has to let them in, so we agree the handover with you. Pickups are booked only after the buyer has paid and only into windows you set. Your yard staff hand over the piece against our pickup confirmation, which names the buyer and the item.

No. We photograph pieces you have already pulled, around your crew's schedule. If you have an older building coming up, tell us before demolition starts and we will tell you which pieces are worth taking out whole.

Every project is quoted in writing after a free walkthrough: a non-refundable setup fee set in your quote, and 15% of what sells after marketplace fees. You keep 85%. We charge nothing for hauling or storage, because nothing moves until it sells.

We agree a listing period up front. Anything unsold at the end comes off the listings and stays yours to keep, reprice or donate. Habitat for Humanity ReStores across North Carolina accept a lot of building material.
